The statement holds true of songwriter Guy Hill who never stopped writing since the age of 18 and never left his guitar - wherever he went.

Guy Hill has been a songwriter for 33 years. Hill's songs have had the interest of several major country recording artists. Greenville, TX (PRWEB) July 31, 2006 -- Guy Hill has been writing songs for 33 years. Hill was born in Austin Texas and now lives in Greenville, Texas, about an hour from Dallas.
Hill has caught the eye of several major country recording artists as a result of his songs being pitched to them through LucKi Entertainment, LLC. Artists such as Gretchen Wilson, John Anderson, Hank Williams, Jr., Kentucky Headhunters, George Strait, Chris LaDoux, Cimarron, Pam Tillis, George Jones, Dwight Yoakum, Steve Holy, Chris Cagle, Dolly Parton, Ricky Skaggs, George Canyon and Randy Travis, and others.
His earliest musical influence was Hank Williams. Hill used to listen to his records as a small child. Hill also listened to his AuntÂs 50Âs rock and roll records. Hill began making up songs to entertain himself at a very early age.
When he was 18 he got his first guitar. Hill taught himself to play. He practiced constantly taking the guitar with him everywhere he went. The first song he learned to play was "DonÂt Be Angry" by Stonewall Jackson. It was then he began songwriting in earnest. By this time Hill's musical influences were Bob Dylan, Gordon Lightfoot, the Eagles, Gram Parsons, Rodney Crowell, Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, George Jones, EmmyLou Harris, and others.

Michael Jackson: An Overlooked classic...
Leaving aside all the hysteria that surrounds Michael Jackson, he still remains a great pop songwriter.
Here is one of his most over looked singles, 'Stranger In Moscow'.
According to Jackson, he wrote the song while on tour in Russia.
The song was a successful European hit but is all too forgotten because of the dance remixes that overplayed the original version.
Here's the video - which might I add captures the essence of isolation and loneliness, beautifully.

Sonya Kitchell on Pop Idol: "No, thank you, not really interested."
Sonya Kitchell's rare gift may result from some fortuitous conspiracyof genetics and environment, or it may be the manifestation ofsomething more mystical -- but there's certainly no denying herexceptional talent. Kitchell is an eloquent songwriter, dazzling singerand old soul who just happens to be 17 years of age.

Sonya Kitchell has been singing almost all her life. Before she reached her teens, she was leading her own jazz band in clubs, and later, she was singing and strumming her guitar on
tour opening for veteran entertainers. So friends thought Kitchell would have been a formidable contender on what has become the nation's ultimate entertainment stage,
the phenomenally successful "American Idol."
The teenage singer-guitarist-songwriter's response? "No, thank you, not really interested."
That's because Kitchell has no interest in performing songs that aren't her
own. Though she's just 17, Kitchell has written more than 100 songs.

A Common Song Format - 'ABAB' - with an addition...
There are many song formats one can use - one of the most common structure is the 'ABAB'.
This means, 'A' would be the verse and 'B' would be the chorus. They would alternate throughout the song and in most cases at the end of the track, there will be some sort of climax in the chorus.
A powerful way to further grab your listener with this kind of song format would be to include the chorus before the actual first verse.
Here is a powerful example of this format - WITH the chorus AS the intro. It's a famous hit written and performed by the modern day soul singer Alicia Keys.
'Fallin' starts with a powerful chorus, grabbing the listener from the first 20 seconds of the song. The added benefit of this is when it's played on the radio, DJ's are less likely to interrupt from the start of the song :-) It works like a charm.

Rykodisc sign Jay Bennett...
Singer-songwriter & multi-instrumentalist Jay Bennett who was once the driving force behind the twice Grammy-nominated band Wilco, has signed a new record deal with Rykodisc.
His sound is said to be a cross between Elvis Costello mixed with Tom Waits, with a hint of The Replacements and Nick Lowe.
Rykodisc will release his latest offering entitled 'The Magnificent Defeat' on September 26th, 2006.
Here's the scoop...

Rykodisc is thrilled to announce the signing of songwriter/producer/multi-instrumentalist Jay Bennett. His long-anticipated solo opus "The Magnificent Defeat" is set for release this September.

Link the Voice & Guitar Through Parallel Melodies
For the more musically minded, (specifically those who play guitar), I dug up this short article how to link your vocals to the guitar using a parallel melody.
So in other words, using intervals between the vocal and the guitar to create melodies. Pretty cool. Check out the full article out here.
Calvin
"Songwriting, at a fundamental level,
involves the uniting of melody and harmony:
the singing of a melody, and its union with a
supporting harmony. For soloist singer/
songwriter/guitarists, this accompanying
harmony is created and played on guitar. For
many bands, too, the guitar is the main
conveyor of harmony. In cases such as these,
one very simple way of adding interest to a
song is by paralleling a melody that’s sung
with a melody that’s played on guitar....."

Paul Simon: "I don't really care what age likes what I do,... I care whether anybody likes what I do, whether it means something to them"

Paul Simon's career has spanned over three decades and a chunk of that success is attached to the duo 'Simon & Garfunkel'. It was in 1970 that Simon began writing and recording his own solo material and enjoyed peak solo success in the 80s when he released Graceland - for which he won a Grammy Award.

Now, Simon has released Surprise, a smart, refreshing CD that finds him exploring new territory with another icon, electronic-music pioneer Brian Eno, and giving voice to listeners who are taking stock of their lives...."

The Great Joni Mitchell
I once read, a great songwriter touches 'almost' everybody. Joni Mitchell has may classics under her belt and has performed many times in her life. However, it was this performance (at age 57) that totally grabbed me and blow me away.
It's her song 'Both Sides Now' and she's backed up by a full string orchestra. The ballad is slow and moving.... it really did touch me.
"Bows and flows of angel hair and ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons everywhere, i've looked at cloud that way.
But now they only block the sun, they rain and snow on everyone.
So many things i would have done but clouds got in my way.
I've looked at clouds from both sides now,
From up and down, and still somehow
It's cloud illusions i recall.
I really don't know clouds at all.
Moons and junes and ferris wheels, the dizzy dancing way you feel
As every fairy tale comes real; i've looked at love that way.
But now it's just another show. you leave 'em laughing when you go
And if you care, don't let them know, don't give yourself away.
I've looked at love from both sides now,
From give and take, and still somehow
It's love's illusions i recall.
I really don't know love at all.
Tears and fears and feeling proud to say "i love you" right out loud,
Dreams and schemes and circus crowds, i've looked at life that way.
But now old friends are acting strange, they shake their heads, they say
I've changed.
Something's lost but something's gained in living every day.
I've looked at life from both sides now,
From win and lose, and still somehow
It's life's illusions i recall.
I really don't know life at all"

Aerosmith Biggest Hit To Date
Most Aerosmith fans I know will loath at the fact that their biggest hit 'I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing' was written by Diane Warren - a songwriter who has written predominantly ballads for artists mainly in the pop/soul & country arena. But I have another perspective on the matter.
If you are judging the song from a 'band' standpoint, then you probably will never fully appreciate the song. Fans of rock know the exciting music they are known for, and some would rather push the song to one side - for every reason pertaining to ..."it's just not Aerosmith."
But when you listen to it form a songwriter's point of you, you know that it's quite simply a great love song which the band have performed brilliantly.
Here's the video to a song that won a Grammy Award, went to number one in the USA and stayed in the top 5 of the singles chart all over Europe for weeks on end.

Local Man Wins Songwriting Awards With Insightful Lyrics
If you started to play an instrument or write songs from as a child - and LEFT all those skills behind as soon as you entered adulthood, do you think it is likely that you would then pick up where you left off 15 years later?

Struggling with Lyrics....
It's not uncommon for musicians to struggle with writing lyrics. In fact, I meet people on a weekly basis who find it hard to bang out a few words.
The thing is, most musicians are under the impression that you have to be 'poetic' when creating lyrics. Well, that's simply not true. Not only do you not have to be poetic, but you don't always need to rhyme either.
There are only a few 'key elements' that you need in order to maximise your chances of lyrical success. These are: The topic of the song, the structure & arrangement, the rhyming patterns and using metaphor and simile.
If you can learn to master these, then you're well on your way.

But for all the laurels he's received for his self-titled 2004 debut and this year's follow-up, "On The Jungle Floor," what the 29-year-old singer-songwriter hasn't achieved is commercial success....."

Singer-songwriter Chistine Evans believes "in order to effect change, we have to push for what we believe in". I couldn't have said it better myself.Enjoy the read...
"A reflection of this belief is Evans's second CD release, Push, for which she wrote all the songs. She alsoco-produced Push with producer Tom Hall in Seattle."I strongly believe in writing my own music. Artists have this powerful position. You should always write about what you believe and what you have to say," the singer/songwriter said from Seattle, while enjoying a family vacation prior to her upcoming Canadian tour....

No Matter How Stupid it Sounds - it Could Still Be a Good Song
Many of us cringe at the thought of something that we've written. There is nothing more important then listening from another persons ears.
But we always assume that we should be critical of ourselves and scrutinize every piece of lyrics, melody of chord - especially when we listen from others peoples ears. But I say this - don't be too hard on yourself. Listen again. Ask yourself:
A) Does my song have good structure? A verse, chorus, verse, chorus? Perhaps a mid section or a bridge? Good structure is important from a listener's point of view.
B) Does my song get across the point of what I'm trying to say? No matter how poetic or direct - does it resolve an issue? Does it complicate an issue? Whatever it's intention is. Does it justify with your end result?
C) Does you song 'sing well'? No Matter what level of a vocalist you are, does the syncopation of the words suite the way your melody flows?
Remember, no matter what your song 'sounds like', YOU must feel that it conveys what you're trying to say - through song & lyrics. Because if you don't, it's likely that not many others will.
Believe in the song, and others will believe you.

Starting with the Lyrics...
If you're going to start writing lyrics first, then write the lyrics in it's entire section before you attempt to write a tune or perhaps a chord sequence. And if you produce drum beats on your words, try and refrain from arranging anything until you've finished what you've started out.
This has help me immensely when songwriting.
It's the old principle of keeping things simple. There isn't any point worrying about what the melody for the chorus will sound like if the lyrics for it are only half written. Finish the chorus 'lyrically', then worry about the tune.
This doesn't mean you shouldn't create the melody while writing you're lyrics. That's NOT what I'm saying. I'm talking about 'section-by-section'.
Another example, there's no point starting to write a middle eight - leaving it unfinished, - and then starting a melody for it. You will probably, more often then so, end up back at the drawing board.

Super Songwriter & Producer Timbaland Stays with Warner Music
If there's anyone who's known for having a fleet of top 10 hits singles with global artists it's R&B and Hip-Hop veteran songwriter Timbaland. He has had a plethora of hits with artists such as Aaliyah, Justin Timberlake, Destiny's Child, Mariah Carey, Ginuwine amongst many others.
He has one of the most extensive catalogues in the world today.
Needless to say, Warner music has retained this songwriting talent. You can read the full article here.

Songwriter uses eBay to get noticed
Now this is something completely new and refreshing. At least it is to me. Songwriter Katherine Schell is selling the rights to her song "The Gravity Situation" on eBay. The successfully bidder will reserve the exclusive right to use the song in a commercial format for one year.
This is certainly one of the most innovative ways of marketing a song. A step up from 'My Space'.
I urge all to read the article here written in The Washington Times.

Songwriter coposed instrumental to Win Competition
If you had a chance to enter a song in every category, would you do it? Would you want to spread you're little golden nuggets through-out the show? Well, Wyn Drabble would. Here's a good read...
Calvin
"A Havelock North song writer is busy recording his next musical composition after winning the instrumental section of this year's Pacific Songwriting Competition.
The international competition is now in its second year and attracts musical artists from all over the world.
This year Wyn Drabble, a Hawke's Bay Today columnist and high school teacher, won first place in the instrumental section with his guitar solo Judith, named after his wife.
Mr Drabble said initially he didn't intend to write an instrumental song about his wife but on completion decided it had a beauty which captured Judith."

Songwriting: Chorus Construction
You gotta read it.
Calvin
--------------------------------
By John Braheny
The majority of choruses adhere to certain guidelines. I say 'majority' because there are songs that ignore some of the guidelines and still win by the strength of their performance, arrangement and/or production.
1. The title should appear in the chorus, in a way that, by virtue of its placement in the chorus and/or its degree of repetition, we know it's the title. If words or phrases other than the title repeat in the chorus, or in strong positions, the listener won't know which is the title when they call the radio station to request it or ask for it at the record store, which is why you sometimes see songs with two titles, like "Untitled (How Does It Feel)," "Blue (Ba Da Dee)" or "C'mon and Ride It (The Train)" – that usually means that someone felt the song's title was not its strongest hook, or even that the song has two hooks and they're covering their bets by putting both in the title. Since you can't buy or request a song if you can't remember its name, these are very important commercial considerations.
2. Keep the information simple enough for people to remember easily. If you're a literary genius, you may tend to think most choruses are too simple. Don't worry about it. They need to be simple! ....

Songwriting: Steps to Writing Hit Lyrics
I have always wondered why for many songwriters, writing lyrics is much more difficult then writing a a melody. I've certainly been a victim - heck, I'd rather write chords all day long than to lyrics to a tune. It's happened on more than one occasion.
But why does sit happen? Is there anything we can do to rectify it? I dug up this wonderful article (written by Molly-Ann Leikin) giving us a deep but 'actioned based' insight on this common predicament.

Writing Songs on the Piano
Everything from the topic of your song, to the chord changes -- the length of your intro, to the structure of your song -- you're melody... all these things come rushing in the mind at one. Many times the 'mood' of the song musically will often dictate the lyrical outcome too.

Keep the Hook Simple and Stupid?
Erm, yes. Controversial title :-) Well, this is an interesting read on how simplicity and repetition are the the key elements to producing a great hook for a song.
I would certainly agree where Steve Moss (editor of Tunesmith Monthly) is coming from. Think of all the great pop classics over the last 30 years, then read this article.
Calvin
---------
What is a hook? Think of any song that was a hit back when you were a kid and start singing it. Chances are, the first thing you think of is its hook. A hook is a brief, memorable, irresistible bit of music, lyric, or both, that the listener will remember even after hearing your song only once. It's the part that gets a song on the radio and sells records. It's the part you can still remember and sing twenty years later...

Too Many Idea's Can Spoil A Song
Well, I've certainly been a victim of packing in too many chord changes or musical idea's in one song. I've dug up this article which explains how you shouldn't focus all your energy into creating several different idea's for one song - but rather zone in on that one GERAT idea, and repeat it over and over
Check it out...
Calvin
----------
When you listen to a song, you probably notice that the music is made up of certain phrases or ideas which repeat themselves throughout the song. These musical phrases are called motifs or themes. They may be as short as a few notes (like the first four notes of "America the Beautiful") or several measures in length. A motif may be melodic, rhythmic, harmonic, or a combination of these. The point being that each time you hear the motif in the song, it registers in your brain as something you've heard before -- and that makes the song easier to remember (and that's good).
A common mistake made by songwriters is thinking that the music becomes "boring" or "too simplistic" when phrases are repeated in this manner. As a songwriter full of musical ideas, you can easily get caught up in trying to be too clever. This usually results in a song that has too many musical ideas -- and that makes the song harder to remember (and that's not good). If one of your main goals as a songwriter is to write something that's memorable, then by far the best technique available to you, is the power of repetition. The trick is in knowing how to use repetition without getting "boring".

A Quick Publishing Digest
A good & concise guide here on song publishing. It briefly (but nicely ;-) explains what publishing is, if you need to start your own publishing house and how you can make money from it.
Special thanks to taxi.com for informative read.
Calvin
What is publishing?
Publishing rights are the rights to a song. If you write a song by yourself, you own the publishing (and copyright) from the moment you finish the song. You don't have to set up shop as a music publisher to own those rights - they automatically come with authorship. There are actually two halves in every publishing dollar. One of the halves is called the "Writer's Share," and that half almost always stays with the writer for life. The other half is called the "Publisher's Share'" and you own that half as well, unless you sign a publishing or co-publishing deal. You can give up some of the publishing rights you own (typically half or all of the "Publisher's Share") in exchange for a cash advance from a music publisher. The publisher will then act as a songplugger to get your song cut by an artist or placed in a movie or TV show. They don't make money unless they get the song used.
Do I need to start my own publishing company?
Typically not. You already own all of your publishing rights from the song's inception. People typically start a publishing company when they get a song "cut" and need a mechanism or company to which they can have the income flow. One word of advice, it's often a better idea to have another company administer your publishing when you have your own publishing company. That means that they will take care of all the business of collecting and disseminating the money that is generated by the song. Many small or individual publishers aren't expert enough to do that on their own.
How do I make money from publishing?
A song generates money for the writer(s) when it appears on an album, gets played on the radio, used in a TV show or movie, gets sold as sheet music, and even when it is used as a ring tone on a cell phone. When the song is part of an album or is sold as sheet music, the writer gets a mechanical royalty. When a song is used in a movie or TV show, a performance royalty is paid to the writer(s).

The Evolution of Nashville
Hi all. We all know that Nashville (USA) has grown into one of the most musical cities in the world. Now, regardless of what genre of music you're into, I'd say it's vital to know the the legacy of this city. Not only because of the songwriters and artists - but also because of the infrastructure of the music industry.
A new book by Michael Kosser reveals all of the above in great depth. There doesn't seem to be a 'release date' yet, but here's a quick review.
Check it out...
New book details emergence, evolution of songwriting in Nashville
Calvin
Here's an peek...
"Rather than simply a straight history text or another volume heavy on gossip and obsessed with recounting myths and wild adventures, Kosser’s book covers events and examines issues frequently overlooked in Nashville music works. He spotlights record label executives, discusses the importance of promotional staffs, explains the significance of publishing companies and focuses on much more than simply the people in front of the microphones.
At the same time, he doesn’t ignore major musical events that happened in Nashville, from the arrival of Bob Dylan to the phenomenon of Garth Brooks. The final sections look at more recent issues involving country and pop locally, among them the rise of independent labels and the image and direction of the country sound in the 21st century."

The Best Living Songwriters
